Assist. Prof. Phal Sano M.D., MPH

Dr. Phal Sano is an Assistant Professor of the School of Public Health, National Institute of Public Health of Cambodia. He was assigned as a lecturer of the school of Public Health since early 2010. Dr. Phal Sano graduated as Medical Doctor in 1997 at the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Health Sciences, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, after completing his degree of Medical Assistant in 1987. In 2001, he graduated his Master degree of Public Health at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), Antwerp, Belgium. In 2002, he got Diploma in STDs/AIDS in Thailand. Then, he continued to build his capacity though many international training courses, conferences and workshops in the areas of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), gender, sexual and reproductive health. From 1999 to March 2011, he was the Head of STI/RTI Unit of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Dermatology and STIs (NCHADS). He has good experiences in policy and strategy development and planning. He also led the development of the National Guidelines, the Standard Operating Procedures and the training curriculum related to STIs. He was invited by the World Health Organization (WHO) regional offices and headquarters to attend many meetings and workshops for development the STI/RTI management guidelines and the regional strategies. Besides managing the STI/RTI unit of NCHADS, he has good experiences in human resource production, development and management. He supervised hundreds health care providers working at STI clinics in whole country. He also had participated in the field of HIV/STI research. Based on his good experience in public health management, he was contracted by WHO/Cambodia in 2011 to assist the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (RMNCH) Task Force of the Ministry of Health for strengthening the coordination of implementation of the Fast Track Initiative Road Map (FTIRM) for reducing maternal and newborn mortality in Cambodia. From October 2012 until now, he is a National Professional Officer (NPO) of the WHO/Cambodia for newborn and child health. Currently, his teaching areas at the School of Public Health are Human Resource Management (Human Resource development), Public Health Management (Planning, Communication) and Reproductive Health Management (HIV/AIDS and STI management).
